The “Freshman 15” is the physical price first time college students for all of the stress, booze, non-stop carbs and sudden lack of parental control they enjoy.

And while it used to sneak up on students, these days many students know better and are able to keep a bit more balance in their life as the first year of school rolls on.

Here’s a rundown of some simple guidelines that can keep students healthy that crazy first year away from home:

  • Plan meals – Since your parents aren’t around to provide you with three meals a day, it’s now your job. Don’t wing it. Instead, take some time and really plan out what you’re eating each day.
  • Never skip breakfast – Many college students sleep late and then rush to class. That gets things off on the wrong foot because you miss boosting your metabolism with that first meal.
  • Every four or five hours – It’s also important to keep metabolism up by eating something every four to five hours.
  • Lay off the booze – There are a lot of calories in alcohol – and no nutritional value. And with judgment impaired, students are more likely to binge on junk food.
  • Beware of stress– Stress messes with your decision-making when it comes to food. When you feel overwhelmed, do your best to avoid emotional eating by calming down and reaching for something healthy.
