Who broke the story of the meteor that streaked across the sky in Russia this week?

If you are a Washington Capitals fan, you might know the answer. Apparently, a local hockey blog was the first source in the English-language Twitterverse.

How come? Well, many of the Caps' biggest stars are from Russia - so the blog, named Russian Machine Never Breaks, has a Moscow correspondent who let the editor in Maryland know what was happening.

The hockey blog published the story a little after 11 pm Thursday night. The Associated Press tweeted its alert about the meteor at 12:21 am Friday.

By the way, Caps 2010 draft pick Evgeny Kuznetsov currently plays for a Russian team in Chelyabinsk, where the meteor caused so much damage.

Here's the whole story from The Atlantic.
