A Canadian astronaut has recorded the first Christmas carol from space.

Strumming a guitar that's been aboard the International Space Station since 2001, Col. Chris Hadfield performed an original song called Jewel In The Night.

The song begins with a look at planet earth:

So bright, jewel in the night
     There in my window below.
So bright, dark as the night
With all of our cities aglow.

By the end of the carol, Col. Hadfield brings an astronaut's perspective to the Christmas season:

It shall be our way to wander away
And take with us all that we know.
And never cease the message of peace
     From Bethlehem so long ago.

The station was also decorated with stockings and a Christmas tree.
