In a first of it's kind, Facebook researchers seem to believe they've developed a Facebook algorithm that can acurately identifiy who you're dating and if and when you're in danger of breaking up.
The algorithm uses a newly developed metric called "dispersion," which looks at connections between a couples different groups of friends. The researchers, a Cornell professor and a senior Facebook engineer, were able to accurately identify who was dating whom with 60% accuracy. Longer relationships and high dispersion rate seemed to correlate. They found that relationsihps were 50% more likely to fail between couples if the dispersion algorithm failed to guess the two were in a relationship.
Other metrics were also used, such as how many events they attended together, times they viewed each other's page, and number of messages sent.
